Soldering Kits
This is the heart of blinkyparts: soldering kits in various difficulty levels – from simple "I Can Solder" kits to complex circuits with SMD components. Ideal for learning, teaching, or just having fun tinkering. All kits include instructions and all necessary parts.
Atari Punk Console – DIY Soldering Kit for 8-Bit Sounds The Atari Punk Console is a soldering kit for sound explorers, chiptune fans, and synth enthusiasts. Two NE555 timer ICs and two potentiometers make one of the simplest synthesizers around – and that is exactly where the edgy, stepped tones of early 8-bit consoles come from. The concept The circuit was designed by Forrest M. Mims III. He published it in 1980 as a “Sound Synthesizer” and, in 1984, in his 555-timer mini-notebook as a “Stepped Tone Generator.” Two NE555 timers share the work. The first runs as an oscillator and produces a rapid stream of pulses. The second shapes those pulses into short square waves. The two potentiometers change pitch and pulse width. The tone does not glide smoothly; it jumps in audible steps. Those sounds recall the sound chips of the Atari era, which is how the circuit became known as the Atari Punk Console. Built as a through-hole (THT) kit, the circuit is soldered one part at a time. A classic timer circuit becomes a hands-on introduction to electronics and experimental sound. What makes it special? Few parts, a clear result: Two NE555 timers and two knobs make a complete synthesizer 8-bit sounds: Beeps, growls, and stepped melodies like early game consoles Two sound controls: One potentiometer sets the pitch, the other sets the pulse width Headphone output: 3.5 mm jack for headphones, powered speakers, or audio interfaces Battery powered: Runs on four AAA batteries, with no mains adapter Room to experiment: A compact circuit you can study, modify, and expand Ideal for: Synthesizer fans and DIY audio tinkerers Workshops on electronics, sound, and STEAM Beginners who want to solder a circuit they can actually hear Artists, chiptune fans, and sound designers Kit contents: 1x Atari Punk Console PCB 2x NE555 timer IC 2x potentiometer 500 kΩ (RV1–RV2) 1x ceramic capacitor 10 nF (C1) 1x ceramic capacitor 100 nF (C2) 1x electrolytic capacitor 10 µF (C3) 1x resistor 47 kΩ (R1) 2x resistor 750 Ω (R2, R3) 1x resistor 100 kΩ (R4) 1x green LED, 5 mm (D1) 1x headphone jack (3.5 mm) 1x battery holder for 4x AAA Note: This synthesizer is designed for battery power with four AAA batteries. Batteries are not included. After assembly, connect headphones, a powered speaker, or an audio interface to the 3.5 mm jack. Pitch and tone change in steps as you turn the potentiometers.
